Abstract
A report on the first Foundation Phase Conference which was held from 30 September to 1 October 2008 in Mokopane, Limpopo. The conference was attended by more than 300 delegates including teachers, education specialists, academics, consultants and NGOs from across South Africa. The conference theme was 'Laying Solid Foundations for Learning: Teaching reading, writing and calculating successfully'. The primary impetus for the conference was to strengthen and sustain the Foundations for Learning Campaign and to showcase best practice in the Foundation Phase, especially in the teaching of reading, writing and calculating.
