Abstract
This chapter presents preliminary findings from a qualitative study which explored pedagogic activities in a child-to-child programme aimed at early education. The Little Elephant Training Centre for Early Education (LETCEE) in rural KwaZulu-Natal initiated The Buddy Programme which used children between the ages of 8 and 13 years to promote early education for young children who were unable to access centre-based provision. The chapter begins with a discussion on the context for child participation. The thematic discussions shed light on pedagogic activities which are supportive of early education through community building, affirming local culture and the introduction of school culture. The value and challenges of the programme are also discussed. In South Africa, early childhood development (ECD) refers to children from birth to 9 years. The most vulnerable children are from birth to 4 years.
