Abstract
Through the notion of children as citizens, this concluding essay draws together the main threads from the preceding essays and points out some important gaps. In so doing, it argues that children’s participation in social dialogue has a crucial role to play in building a democratic society in South Africa. Together, the other essays show the many benefits of children’s participation. This essay shows that the democratic value of participation is another compelling reason why it is in everyone’s best interests to support children’s participatory rights. The essay addresses five questions:
• What is citizenship?
• What is the ideal of citizenship in South Africa?
• Why is social dialogue important for children’s citizenship? • What are the key messages and lessons?
• What are the gaps?
