Abstract
Essential services for young children are foregrounded in this year's issue of the South African Child Gauge. This annual review of South Africa's children, now in its eighth year, was published in collaboration with UNICEF South Africa and Ilia Labantwana. The 2013 issue focuses on the theme 'Stepping up national development: Prioritising essential services for young children'. The issue highlights the importance of investing early to ensure the optimum development of young children and defines an essential package of care and support services for young children and their families. In particular, essays explore key service areas including nutrition, maternal and child health, caregiver support, parenting programmes, early learning opportunities and early schooling.
